We are seeing an increase of crape myrtle bark scale in our region. These scales are often noticed because the tree becomes covered in black sooty mold. Look for crape myrtle bark scales in rough areas and around branch collars. The good news is, these pests are treatable! Current research show the best method to keep them at bay is to spray with horticultural oil in late winter/early spring along with a soil injection of a systemic insecticide, then follow up with another horticultural oil in December when leaves drop.
